Bishop Bossuet (see below) was a church leader to the court of Louis XIV. He wrote a book in 1709 that advanced the theory that all power comes from God and that the kings were God's representatives down on earth.

This "divine right: to govern prevented the citizens from defying the kings authority as this could be considered heresy against the church and defiance against God. The doctrine of the Divine Right of Kings was taught by the clegry and was meant to result in a just authority that reflected the will of God. It supported absolute monarchy.
